A reliable rainy-day pick on our Midwest family itineraries.
Planning a Day at the Zoo
The zoo sits on Cleveland's near south side, a short drive from downtown, and covers a large, hilly site that rewards a little planning. The grounds are spread out, with noticeable climbs between some areas, so comfortable shoes matter more than you might expect. Families with small children often bring a stroller or wagon, and it helps to pick a few must-see areas before you arrive rather than trying to cover everything at once.
Inside and outside
The indoor rainforest building is the obvious anchor on a wet or cold day. It is warm and humid inside, so dress in layers you can peel off when you step in from a chilly Lake Erie afternoon. Outdoors, the zoo groups animals by region. Many visitors find mornings the best time to go, when temperatures are cooler and animals tend to be more active. In summer, bring water and plan shade breaks. In the shoulder seasons, a light rain jacket lets you move between indoor and outdoor exhibits without cutting the day short.
Practical tips
- Check the official website before you go for current hours, ticket prices, seasonal events and any exhibits closed for maintenance.
- Buy tickets in advance on busy weekends and during holiday light events, which can draw large evening crowds.
- Pack snacks and a refillable bottle, and confirm the zoo's current policy on outside food.
- Allow half a day at least. A full day suits families who like to linger at favourite habitats.
Making it part of a longer trip
The zoo pairs well with other stops in the Cleveland Metroparks system, whose reservations ring the city with trails, river valleys and picnic areas. On a fair-weather day you could follow a morning at the zoo with a walk in a nearby reservation. On a stormy one, add an indoor museum in University Circle.
